One of the general characters of the masses is an excessive moment in submission, which is contagious within each human assembly. This explains the quick orientation of emotions in a certain direction. As neutral as anyone imagines, the mass is quite often in a state full of expectation of readiness, favorable for submission. The first submission that is expressed is immediately transmissible to all the brains and gives immediate orientation. In the beings being subjected, prevention tends to be transformed into action. Whether it is to burn a palace or perform a loyalty project, the mass gives its consent with the same ease. Everything will depend on the nature of the irritation, Not as it happens to the individual ,on the relationship between the act of submission and the burden of reason, which can offset its realization.
Frightened by the critical spirit, the mass can only show an excessive credulity. For this, it is unlikely that we have to remember it, to understand the ease with which the traditions and the strangest narratives are created and disseminated. ”

Gustave Le Bon, “A Study of the Popular Mind”,1895
